SBNoD first meeting of 2023 - Job redesign and inclusive hiring best practices

It was great to convene our first SBNoD meeting of the year on 27 Feb 2023, and see familiar and new faces as we exchanged insights on job redesign and inclusive hiring best practices for PwDs. We are grateful for Michael Page for hosting & sharing their heartfelt insights, as well as SG Enable for sharing available resources for companies to tap on. We are also heartened by everyone’s open sharing and questions :)

Key Takeaways:

Useful to take a candidate-centric approach to hiring PwDs, instead of trying to shoehorn them to existing JDs.

  • Assess the pool of PwD candidates for their unique skills and human qualities that can fit your organisation, before embarking on possible job redesign for them.

  • Speak to Michael Page and SG Enable if you wish to seek assistance on candidate sourcing and job redesign.

Take the first step to hiring PwDs – even if things may never be 100% ideal at your workplace to accommodate PwDs. This may give the nudge to the ‘unconverted’ in your organisation to sort out the range of obstacles to making your workplace more PwD friendly

  • For companies new on the journey, this can be starting via internships (which SG Enable can facilitate)

  • Instigate a shift in mindset when assessing PwD candidates, particularly for hiring managers – overcome your internal lens of disability and see the candidate for their skills first and foremost. Some successful candidates have surprised managers with their level of dedication and empathy to the team, which Michael Page shared.
